Plan management explained

Not sure what plan management means?

Most people who come to us are still working through what the NDIS involves. This page explains plan management in plain language.

What is plan management?

THE BASICS

When you have an NDIS plan, you have a choice about how your funding is managed. Choosing plan management means a registered plan manager handles the financial administration on your behalf.

We receive invoices from your support providers, arrange payment of those invoices using your NDIS funding, maintain financial records, and produce regular statements so you always know where your budget sits. You keep full control over who provides your supports and how your funding is used.

No cost to you

Plan management is funded by the NDIS as a separate line item in your plan. It does not affect your support budget. If it is not currently in your plan, you can ask for it to be added.

YOUR OPTIONS

Three ways to manage NDIS funding

The NDIS offers participants three management options.

OPTION 1

Self-managed

You manage all payments and financial records yourself. You have maximum flexibility and can use any provider, registered or not, but you take on all the administrative responsibility.

OPTION 2

Plan-managed

A registered plan manager handles financial administration on your behalf. You keep full choice of providers including unregistered ones, and you remain in control of your supports. No cost to you.

OPTION 3

NDIA-managed

The NDIA manages payments on your behalf. You can only use registered providers, which limits your options when choosing supports.

What if plan management is not in my plan?

COMMON QUESTION

If plan management is not already included, you can request it at your next plan review. It is a common and straightforward request.
